Tomato postharvest loss: A five-year comprehensive review of treatments, optimization, and environmental influences
Main Article Content
Abstract
This comprehensive five-year review examines 80 articles for strategies to mitigate postharvest losses of tomatoes through treatments, optimization, and environmental considerations. The study synthesizes findings from various research articles spanning the years 2019 to 2023 mapped via PRISMA methodology, focusing on the efficacy of different postharvest treatments, including calcium chloride, chitosan coating, gum Arabic, wood ash, and Moringa seed extract. Optimal concentration thresholds for these treatments are explored, highlighting variations based on experimental conditions and tomato varieties. Furthermore, environmental factors such as temperature management, packaging materials, modified atmosphere, and evaporative coolers are analyzed for their impact on postharvest quality preservation. The review also addresses socio-economic dynamics affecting postharvest challenges and emphasizes the need for tailored interventions to enhance food security. Key findings underscore the complexities involved in tomato preservation, including the interplay between technological advancements, local agricultural systems, and infrastructure. Overall, this study contributes valuable insights into effective strategies for reducing postharvest losses and improving tomato shelf life, with implications for enhancing food security and sustainability in agricultural systems.
