From crops to algae: Unraveling the trajectory of biofuel research and assessing sustainability in non-edible feedstocks
Main Article Content
Abstract
This in-depth research examines the history of biofuel production and feedstock studies and provides insights into the evolving research landscape over the years. The analysis, based on a careful review of 70 articles from 1973-2023, shows a dynamic shift in research focus from conventional food crops to more diverse exploration emphasizing non-edible alternatives, including seaweed. The distribution of articles by databases, research methods, publication types and years enables a comprehensive understanding of research trends. The study notes continued interest in human edible feedstocks, while also noting a significant increase in research attention to non-edible alternatives, consistent with the global transition from first to third generation biofuel production. The sustainability assessment of biofuel production from non-edible raw materials highlights both potential environmental benefits and challenges and highlights the need for a comprehensive assessment. The study concludes with recommendations for future research and emphasizes the importance of filling knowledge gaps and exploring new technologies in biofuel production.
